Amy Johnson is from Ngukurr a community situated on part of the old Urapunga Station on the Roper River the southern border of Arnhem Land about 450 km SE of Katherine and about 60 km downriver from the Gulf.

It has a modern school, local government office, health clinic with a Doctor, and police station, lockup as well as a community run store.

In its recent past there was a Church Missionary Society, an Anglican Mission established in 1908 who had a great influence on the local people.It is also a dry community which means alcohol should not be brought into the community. Most drinkers stop and drink at the old police station at the Roper River crossing.

The Roper is one of the largest rivers in the Northern Territory and has abundant wildlife and is noted for its fishing particularly for Barramundi and its many Crocodiles.

Her paintings reflect the features of her world the billabongs, the bird life and the animals of area where she lives.

Amy Johnson country is undulating with a few hills and caves, river flats and billabongs with salt flats and casuarina forests.

She paints with acrylic on canvas and is one of a group of noted artists from Ngukurr who began to paint there in the late 1980s.Her works are reflective of the style of painting that is unique to the area and is not the traditional dots of the desert or the rarrk cross hatching style of the bark painters of northern Arnhem land.Other noted artists from that era are Ginger Riley, Willie Gudabi, Moima Willie, and Amy's husband now deceased, Sambo Djambu Barra Barra

.Amy has painted for many years and during this time has won awards for her paintings and her works are in many private collections and galleries in Australia.
