Although Norma lived in Ngukurr with her husband and family she was from desert areas further south. Her style of painting differs to the style of the Ngukurr artists some who paint in a primitive style unique to Ngukurr or use the cross hatching or rarrk of the Arnhem land artists. Norma painted in the style of the desert dot painting
Norma was a well respected teacher in Ngukurr she was awarded NAIDOC Scholar of the year in 1987 . She was also involved in ear health programs at the school
Ngukurr is a community located on the banks of the Roper River in South East Arnhem Land. The community is made up of many clans and language groups, including Ngalakgan, Alawa, Mangarrayi, Ngandi, Marra, Wandarrang, Nunggubuyu, Ritharrngu-Wagilak and Rembarrnga, together they are known as Yugul Mangi.
